Taipei (CNS) honeyed ladies.-- Agencies in Taiwan will ramp up efforts to ensure food safety and rebuild the reputation of Taiwanese food products, according to Taiwan's leader Ma Ying-jeou at press conference Wednesday.

Recent discovery that various food starch products contained the banned additive maleic acid have aroused public concern over food safety in the region.

A total of 230,200 metric tons of problematic starch-based products have been withdrawn from sale, according to Ma, who also released several measures aimed at tightening food safety.

The measures include more stringent penalties for violators and more urgency for the establishment of a food safety monitoring system.

Several other resolutions were also reached at a meeting on food safety held Wednesday evening.

The resolutions call for strengthened food safety checks by government agencies, swifter coordination and inter-agency cooperation, blocking chemical materials from flowing into the food production system, and an improved food safety reporting system.
