(ECNS) -- Macao will bring in about 300 domestic helpers from the Chinese mainland under a trial plan, according to the Hong Kong based newspaper Wen Wei Po on Monday.

Industry insiders say the minimum monthly wage for the maids is expected to reach 5,000 patacas (US$625), about twice as much as an average foreign maid earns in Macao.

"We have been finalizing the implementation details with the Ministry of Commerce," said Francis Tam Pak Yuen, secretary for economy and finance of the Macao SAR.

He also said that of the 300 housemaids to be brought in, 200 will come from Guangdong province and the other 100 from Fujian province.

The housemaids from Guangdong mainly come from the cities of Zhuhai and Zhongshan, and are expected to receive salaries of up to 5,000 to 6,000 patacas.

The age limit for domestic helpers under the plan is between 40 to 50 years old.

The application procedure will kick off as soon as the draft implementation plan is confirmed by the Ministry of Commerce.
