London (CNS) - Xiamen University established its own British alumni association on Sunday. A 26-member list for the first council of the association was also passed.

The university has introduced a series of preferential policies to attract overseas, high-end talents to China, hoping they will help improve the university's academic levels.

Xiamen University has 69 domestic and overseas alumni associations, according to the university's principal Zhu Chongshi. He expressed hope that the British alumni association will be a bridge between alumni and their alma mater, and also contribute to the Sino-British friendship.

Xiamen University was founded by patriotic overseas Chinese leader Tan Kah Kee in 1921. It is the first university started by overseas Chinese in the history of China's modern education.

The university will also reportedly set up a branch school in Malaysia.
