Chengdu (ECNS) -- Eight schools in southwest China that have adopted an earthquake warning system participated in a joint drill for the first time on Thursday.
The schools responded to a simulated 8-magnitude earthquake.
Students of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Yunnan and Chongqing schools carried out various measures according to evacuation times and locations in buildings.
Wang Tun, director of the Chengdu Gaoxin District Earthquake Mitigation Bureau, said the exercise will help teachers and students be more prepared in the event of an actual disaster.
More than 200 students and teachers at Gaoxin's Shunjiang School who had participated in a similar drill were successfully evacuated during the 28-second countdown during the Lushan earthquake, Wang added.
Chen Xun, from the Sichuan provincial academy of governance, said the quake warning system is a cutting-edge technology that needs government promotion as well as regulation.
