Nanning (CNS) -- China will launch an annual inspection of state-sponsored students who are pursuing doctoral degrees overseas, starting Sept 1, the China Scholarship Council said Tuesday.
Dong Zhixue, director of the Division of American and Oceanic Affairs under the council, made the announcement during a training conference for this year's state-sponsored students in Nanning, Southwest China's Guangxi province.
Dong said some students who completed their studies ahead of schedule didn't report it, and continued to receive financial support, and those who were delayed in graduating also failed to report it. So the annual inspection of schoolwork is necessary, he said.
Students who fail to report changes in visa types, countries of study and study plans have to pay back all expense plus 30 percent as a penalty, he said.
In 2012, the council sponsored more than 15,000 Chinese students to study abroad at world-class universities.
