Beijing (CNS) -- A survey released Tuesday showed that the average sleeping index of Chinese people is 64.3, a little higher than passing marks, due to pressure from work and life, although they get an average of 8 hours and 50 minutes of sleep.
Residents of Zhengzhou in Henan province, Xiamen in Fujian province, Qiqihar in Heilongjiang province, Chongqing municipality, and Xi'an in Shaanxi province topped the sleeping index list, and the five were named "good dream cities." Dongguan, Kunming, Beijing, Guangzhou and Xining are "sleepless cities," due to their residents' low sleeping index, the survey said.
The survey also showed males sleep better than females, and singles enjoy better sleep than married people.
Rural residents with higher incomes sleep more soundly, while low-income urban citizens sleep better, the survey concluded.
The survey suggests not using mobile devices and computers at night, as they have a negative impact on sleeping.
Hong Zhaoguang, an expert on health education, said sleep problems have threatened people's health globally and overall wellness lies in healthy sleep, not healthcare pills. Hong also advised the public to raise awareness of sleep as a human need that is often compromised by the habits of modern life.
The survey, conducted ahead of World Sleep Day, evaluated Chinese people's sleeping conditions using a scientific system for the first time.
