Shanghai (CNS) -- The number of dead pigs found floating in a river flowing into Shanghai has soared to almost 6,000.
Altogether 233 boats were sent, and 5,916 swine carcasses were retrieved from the upper reaches of Shanghai's Huangpu River by Tuesday afternoon, the Shanghai municipal government said.
Aquatic plant barriers were set up to intercept dead pigs, and more manpower has been provided in Jinshan district to remove pigs while they are farther upstream.
The carcasses have been disposed of safely, and the river's water quality is being monitored, officials said. The city's water plants are stepping up efforts to disinfect public water and increase the frequency of quality checks, officials added.
The city's bureaus are cooperating to ensure its water quality, and Shanghai's drinking water remains safe, officials said.
