Hong Kong (CNS) ?C?C The crackdown on infant-formula smuggling will be intensified severely if the formula ban takes effect on March 1, the Hong Kong Security Bureau said on Sunday.
Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok said that once the amended legislation is approved it will apply to all people, regardless of background, and to all types of formula products. He warned visitors not to defy it.
HK government officials have said the amendment would prohibit individuals from carrying more than 1.8 kilograms, or about two cans, of formula across the city's borders.
The amendment is to be handed to the Hong Kong Legislative Council this Wednesday for final approval.
Customs checkpoints have already been equipped with new facilities including X-ray machines, according to reports by Wen Wei Po, a Hong Kong-based newspaper.
