Taipei (CNS) -- The number of tourists to Taiwan from Hong Kong and Macao has reached a new record, increasing by more than 20 percent compared to 2011, the Mainland Affairs Council in Taiwan said on Friday.
Combined, Hong Kong and Macao form the third region to have more than one million tourists to Taiwan, following the mainland and Japan, according to the council.
Visitors from Hong Kong and Macao tend to spend a daily average of US$212.61 each, less than those from Japan, the mainland and Singapore.
Taiwan has simplified entry procedures for tourists from Hong Kong and Macao since 2010 and added airlines between Hong Kong and Taiwan, the council said.
Taiwan has also launched a series of incentives to attract tourists from the two cities.
