Beijing (CNS) ?C "Lost in Thailand," the dark horse of China's 2012 year-end film season, has grossed more than 1.1 billion yuan since its December 12 debut, setting a new record at the Chinese box office.

The small-budget comedy directed by actor-turned-director Xu Zheng cost only about 20 million yuan (US$3.1 million) to make, but it earned a stunning 300 million yuan in just five days, marking the highest-grossing first week at the box office for a domestic film ever.

On December 15 alone it saw China's highest-ever number of daily screenings, luring nearly 2.78 million viewers and raking in 93 million yuan.

Film critic Gao Jun said that this season's films, including "Back to 1942" about a famine that killed 3 million people, and "The Last Supper" about a ruthless dictator, are too depressing. "Lost in Thailand" came at the right time, he said.

The film's total number of viewers has reached 30 million, surpassing "Avatar" and setting a new record in mainland film history.
