Beijing (CNS)-- China's second west-to-east gas pipeline, the world's longest, became fully operational Sunday when natural gas reached the last section of the Guangzhou-Nanning line, PetroChina has said.

The 8,704-kilometer pipeline includes one trunk line and eight regional lines, and traverses 15 provincial regions and the Hong Kong SAR. It is connected to 20 other pipelines that are under construction, creating a network of natural gas covering 40,000 square kilometers, the company said.

With an investment of about 142.2 billion yuan (US$21.88 billion), the project can carry 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region to the Yangtze and Pearl River deltas, it also said.
