(Ecns.cn) -- A Beijing court on Thursday ruled in favor of several popular Chinese writers in a copyright lawsuit against electronics giant Apple Inc.
The Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court found Apple liable for copyright infringement, and ordered it to award eight Chinese writers, including Murong Xuecun and Li Chengpeng, 412,000 yuan (US$66,000) in losses.
Wang Guohua, a lawyer for the Writers' Rights Protection Union, an organization representing the plaintiffs, said the ruling was satisfying, but the compensation was far from it.
The writers had initially asked for about 10 million yuan, according to reports.
The cost of online copyright infringement is low in China, but the cost of protecting rights is high, said Wang. Apple does not attach much importance to protection of copyright owners here, but it is difficult to collect evidence against the company, he added.
The writers claimed that Apple had sold their books through its online App Store without authorization, prompting them to appeal to the court in October last year.
