Nanjing (CNS) -- Asteroid Toutatis will definitely not crash into Earth and the "doomsday" rumor is ridiculous, an astronomer said during an interview Wednesday.

Ji Jianghui, an astronomer at the Purple Mountain Observatory (Chinese Academy of Sciences), said asteroid Toutatis got "close" to Earth on December 12, 2012, passing within 6.9 million kilometers, but is now moving away.

Its closest approach occurred in 2004, but it was still 1.5 million kilometers from us, Ji said. Although Toutatis gets relatively close to Earth every four years, the odds of a collision are very slim in the next 200 years.

Toutatis is irrelevant to the rumor, said Ji, who added that "doomsday" will never occur.

He also denied rumors that there would be three consecutive days of darkness after December 21.
