Guangzhou (CNS)-- The Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway scheduled to open December 26 will improve overall transportation in the region it covers, according to Fu Zhuo, an expert at Central South University's School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering.

Fu responded Monday to concerns that the new line would create competition for other transportation modes such as airlines and expressways.

Air and highway transportation alone can no longer fulfill the huge traffic demand in the region, said Fu.

As China's economic development picks up, traffic between the 28 cities in six provinces along the railway has also increased, Fu said, so the high-speed railway will help meet that demand.

A balance will be reached between the railway and other transportation channels in the long term, Fu added.
