Beijing (CNS) ?C?C A record-breaking 1.53 million applicants had registered to take the 2013 national civil service examination by the time the application period closed at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The recruitment program received more than 1.38 million qualified applications for the test.

Civil service test applications have increased tenfold, from 125,000 in 2003 to more than 1.44 million in 2010. The number dropped for two straight years, however, as the government tended to recruit more experienced applicants. In 2011 the number was 1.41 million, and then 1.33 million in 2012. The 2013 recruitment plan has allowed more graduates, which has affected applicant numbers.

The most sought after position is the National Bureau of Statistics' Chongqing branch, which received nearly 9,000 applications. Meanwhile, 132 jobs had no qualified applicants by closing time on Wednesday.

The approval process will end at 6 p.m. Friday.
