Dengfeng (CNS) -- Some 50,000 young apprentices performed kung fu on Sunday along the 15-km road towards Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, the birthplace of Chinese martial arts, as part of the opening ceremony of the Ninth Shaolin International Martial Arts Festival.

Shaolin Temple is nestled on Mount Songshan of Dengfeng city, home to nearly 100 martial arts schools which contributed the majority of the performers for the event.

About 1,500 athletes and guests from 73 countries and regions attended the festival. "It is really amazing," said a British apprentice who was inspired by the film "Shaolin Temple" to study kung fu.

It is the first time so many unique techniques of Shaolin kung fu are being publically demonstrated, said Yin Chengming, 73, a local resident.
