Beijing (CNS) ?C?C Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan attended a symposium on Thursday held by the Chinese National Academy of Arts to celebrate his literature prize, his first public appearance in Beijing.

Mo bowed at the start of his speech, saying he felt frightened at winning the prize as he thought many writers in the world deserved it.

A desire to improve life drives me to write, Mo said, but most of it comes from the strong impulse to tell the stories looming in my mind.

The experience since winning the award has allowed me to gain a better understanding of others, life and myself, Mo said, adding that both praise and sarcasm from the Internet and social media had been instructive.

Yu Qiuyu, a famous writer, praised Mo's attitude, saying that he brought honor to Chinese writers.

Wu Yiqin, a scholar of Chinese modern literature, said Mo winning the prize will accelerate the pace of Chinese literature in the world and give it an opportunity to be re-evaluated.

Mo expressed hope that the focus would be transferred from the prize to literature, from Mo Yan, an individual writer, to all Chinese contemporary writers.
