Washington (CNS) -- China added $4.3 billion worth of Treasury securities in August, following the slight increase of $2.3 billion in July, according to statistics released Tuesday by the U.S. Treasury Department.
With a total holding of more than $1.15 trillion, China remains the U.S.'s largest creditor, the data showed.
This is the second month that China has increased its U.S. debt holdings in the latter part of this year.
Japan bought $5.3 billion in Treasuries in August, increasing its total U.S. debt holdings to $1.12 trillion. The gap between China and Japan in the amount held has narrowed to $32.1 billion.
Demand for U.S. debt has remained high, with foreign holdings rising to a record $5.43 trillion in August.
