Xichang (CNS) -- The 14th and 15th satellites for the Beidou (Compass) global navigation and positioning network were launched Wednesday morning from the space center in Xichang, southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The launch was part of a three-step development strategy to complete the regional network and upgrade the system, said the launch center.

There will be another satellite launch by the end of this year, and the system will have more than 30 satellites around 2020 to provide more precise and reliable service, it added.

Developed and operated independently by China, the Beidou system has been applied to transportation, meteorology, the fishery industry, telecommunications, mapping and forestry.
