Beijing (CNS) -- The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) and the Boeing Company opened the Boeing-COMAC Aviation Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Technology Center on Thursday.

Its first project will be to refine waste cooking oil, often described in China as "gutter oil," into sustainable aviation biofuel.

According to COMAC, waste cooking oil shows potential as an alternative to petroleum-based fuel, since China annually consumes approximately 29 million tons of cooking oil, while its aviation system uses 20 million tons of jet fuel.

Shi Jianzhong, vice president of COMAC, said the collaboration with Boeing will accelerate the global push for renewable jet fuels and support commercial aviation industry growth.
