Lhasa (CNS) -- A gold-plated roof with a 300 or more year history is one of the attractions of Jokhang Temple. A project to maintain the unique roof was initiated last year and will be finished by the end of 2013.
Jokhang Temple is located on Barkhor Square in Lhasa, itself having a history of 1,350 years. For most Tibetans Jokhang is the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. The architectural style is a blending of Indian vihara, Chinese Tang and Nepalese designs.
The fifth Dalai Lama ordered the original gold plating and three hundred years of weathering have either severely damaged parts of it or dulled the original lustre. To recover its splendor, the Chinese government has invested 120 million yuan in the maintenance project.
