Hong Kong (CNS) -- "I want to go home, I want to go home," wailed an old man who couldn't endure the loneliness of a nursing home. This is a scene from the film A Simple Life, but it is also a reality that makes Hong Kong people feel distressed.

Hong Kong's rapidly aging population is becoming a serious social problem, with each working resident expected to be supporting 1.27 non-working persons by 2029, according to a government report issued this week.

The report promotes filial piety and suggests government provide more support tailored for the needs of families supporting seniors. It is argued filial piety is a core value in society and the family a vital cell of society.

According to a survey by the Family Council of Hong Kong, 69 percent of interviewees are willing to live with their aged parents, and 85 percent of them are willing to provide them basic support.

Huanghe Mingxiong, a sociologist from Hong Kong Baptist University, said many people had to send their parents to nursing homes for economic reasons, limited living space and so on.
