Hong Kong (CNS) -- Despite a judicial review, the Hong Kong part of the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge constuction will catch up with the overall pace, and completion by 2016 is assured, said Donald Tsang, chief executive and president of the Executive Council of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), at the opening ceremony of the project.

The bridge will extend to the Hong Kong port from the northeast part of the SAR, reach Hong Kong International Airport and Tung Chung New Town, and join the current road system that connects to the northwest New Territories and other parts of the SAR.

The project will reclaim a water area of about 150 hectares for the bridge and an underwater tunnel, scheduled to take 50 months in total.

The Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao governments have cooperated to build a six-lane structure with an underwater tunnel that will set a new record for being the longest sea-spanning brige with an immersed tube tunnel in the world.
