Changsha (CNS) -- A boy and a girl, both born in central China's Hunan Province at 6 a.m. on October 10, 2009, share the same symptoms of having abnormal kidneys, though not blood-related.
Yuchen, the boy from Xinhua County, has three kidneys. Xinyi, the girl from Longhui County, has four.
They suffer from renal duplication abnormalities, which came into being during kidney growth in the womb, and the chance of happening is eight in one thousand cases, said Zu Jiancheng, Xinyi's urology surgeon in charge.
Xinyi had one of her abnormal kidney removed on the morning of November 2. The rest won't affect her physical functioning, said Zu.
Yuchen ought to have a surgery on Thursday, but it was postponed because he caught a cold. He had frequent fevers and pains on the abdomen recently.
Xinyi's mother said that Xinyi was found hydronephrosis when the baby was eight-month old.
Zu attributes the coincidence to pollution. Xinyi's mother worked in a dusty shoe factory for 10 years. Radiation is said to be the very cause of Yuchen's disease, said his mother, who used to work in a photocopy shop.
