UCLA Chinese scientist elected US academician

Los Angeles (CNS) -- Dr. Wang Cuny, professor at the Dentistry School of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, on October 17, the first time a scientist from the Chinese mainland was awarded the laurel.

Dr. Wang's research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of inflammation, apoptosis, and oncogenesis. Widely recognized by the international medical science sphere, he has made huge contributions to the fields of dentistry and preclinical medicine.

Dr. Wang, 48, graduated from Nanjing Medical University and Peking University in the 1980s. He started his post-doctoral study at the Forsyth Institute in Boston in 1990. Later, he taught at the University of Michigan and the University of California.

Dr. Wang's papers, published in world-class science periodicals, including Nature and Nature Medicine, had a great impact on his field and have been cited over 10,000 times.
